RICHARD HELLER GALLERY, Santa Monica is pleased to present, Melting Into The Floor, a solo exhibition of new works by Oakland based artist, Brendan Monroe. The show will consist of a body of paintings on paper and a number of sculptures in wood.
This new body of work slips just beyond the border of reality. The figurative paintings and sculptures have fallen through the folds of reason, have been flattened out, liquified and parceled into various shapes. The title, Melting Into the Floor connotes a feeling of dissolving and morphing into an abstract state. As liquid can change into a gas or solid, the artist is interested in the crossing point at which fundamental alteration sets course. It is Brendan’s goal to somehow catch these figures shortly after the moment when they’ve burst into ribbons and blobs. Monroe imagines these images at frozen points of motion with an implied short narrative that refers to the before and after.
Monroe received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design in 2004. He has had solo exhibitions with Faye Fleming and Partner in Geneva, Switzerland, Galerie L.J. in Paris, France and Cooper Cole in Toronto, Canada. His work has recently appeared in the New York Times and New Yorker magazine.

This year looks like it’ll be a busy one for me with two big solo shows. The first one will be in May in Los Angeles at Richard Heller Gallery and the second is planned for the fall at Galerie L.J. in Paris.
NEW YORK
The Society of Illustrators has some original drawings from my Islands comics on view until January 26 in New York. They’ve been accepted as part of the sequential Illustrators 55 competition.
LOS ANGELES
I’ll be at the LA Art Book Fair at the end of the month presented by Printed Matter at the Geffen Contemporary in Japan Town. I’m sharing a table with Deth and Evah, but there will be a bunch other amazing artists and friends as well. January 31 - February 3.
MIAMI
December 4 - 9 I’ll have two new sculptures at the Miami Project with Richard Heller Gallery, booth #301. 
In the East Bay
Sound and the Flurries is a group show opening at RPS in Oakland on December 6. I’ll be showing a handful of drawings from my Islands comics there through the 29th.
December 8 I’ll be in Berkeley at the East Bay Zine Fest with some friends, Deth Marci, Teppei and Evah.
GOTHENBURG
Evah and I have zines included in a show titled Collection, presented by Jarko, December 1- 19.

Space // Form
Breeze Block Gallery in Portland OR presents Space // Form, a group show of 10 x 10 inch works on panel. The show is curated by Sven Davis of Arrested Motion and includes over 100 contemporary artists. It runs until September 29.
SAN FRANCISCO
My wife, Evah Fan’s solo show What Have You is currently up in San Francisco at Park Life and runs through September 30.
