RICHARD HELLER GALLERY, Santa Monica is pleased to present, Melting Into The Floor, a solo exhibition of new works by Oakland based artist, Brendan Monroe. The show will consist of a body of paintings on paper and a number of sculptures in wood.

This new body of work slips just beyond the border of reality. The figurative paintings and sculptures have fallen through the folds of reason, have been flattened out, liquified and parceled into various shapes. The title, Melting Into the Floor connotes a feeling of dissolving and morphing into an abstract state. As liquid can change into a gas or solid, the artist is interested in the crossing point at which fundamental alteration sets course. It is Brendan’s goal to somehow catch these figures shortly after the moment when they’ve burst into ribbons and blobs. Monroe imagines these images at frozen points of motion with an implied short narrative that refers to the before and after.

Monroe received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design in 2004. He has had solo exhibitions with Faye Fleming and Partner in Geneva, Switzerland, Galerie L.J. in Paris, France and Cooper Cole in Toronto, Canada. His work has recently appeared in the New York Times and New Yorker magazine.

Happy New Year!
This year looks like it’ll be a busy one for me with two big solo shows. The first one will be in May in Los Angeles at Richard Heller Gallery and the second is planned for the fall at Galerie L.J. in Paris.

NEW YORK
The Society of Illustrators has some original drawings from my Islands comics on view until January 26 in New York. They’ve been accepted as part of the sequential Illustrators 55 competition.

LOS ANGELES
I’ll be at the LA Art Book Fair at the end of the month presented by Printed Matter at the Geffen Contemporary in Japan Town. I’m sharing a table with Deth and Evah, but there will be a bunch other amazing artists and friends as well. January 31 - February 3.

In the East Bay
Sound and the Flurries is a group show opening at RPS in Oakland on December 6. I’ll be showing a handful of drawings from my Islands comics there through the 29th.

December 8 I’ll be in Berkeley at the East Bay Zine Fest with some friends, Deth Marci, Teppei and Evah.

Space // Form
Breeze Block Gallery in Portland OR presents Space // Form, a group show of 10 x 10 inch works on panel. The show is curated by Sven Davis of Arrested Motion and includes over 100 contemporary artists. It runs until September 29.

I will be at Comic Con in San Diego this year sharing a table with Mario (Mars-1) Martinez. July 14, Saturday only we’ll be making a special pop up store at booth #5032 in conjunction with MAS and Cardboard Spaceship. We’ve collaborated on a painting recently that will be available as a limited edition screen print and we will both have books, zines, shirts and other goodies from the flat files. Stop by if you are near and say hi.

I will also be releasing a new limited edition Japanese vinyl sculpture entitled Figment. There will be 50 in each of two colors. On Saturday I will be at the DKE booth #4738 doing a signing between 3pm and 4pm. The new figure will be available durring the whole show. Come by and get a small drawing on it on Saturday.

Kinektron Poster Series
I recently made a series of paintings in collaboration with Glen Liberman’s music project titled Kinektron. They will be released as 12 x 12 inch posters in two groups of three. Each poster comes with an MP3 track that matches the image. The music can be heard here and the posters seen here.

Particle Collisions

Observations of Light and Matter is opens at Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto this friday, March 2. Please stop by and see it in person if you are in Toronto. I will be there for the opening reception and I will be giving a talk on Saturday, March 3, presented by The Ministry of Artistic Affairs.

PARIS
March 15, Evah and I are both participating in a group show opening at Galerie L.J. in Paris. The gallery selected a group of it’s represented artists, then asked them to each invite another artist. Each work in the show is produced at the standard european size of 40 x 30 cm or Quarante Par Trente.

COOPER COLE is pleased to welcome American artist Brendan Monroe for his first solo exhibition in Toronto.

Through a series of paintings and sculptures, Monroe tells a story of a world filled with unique personalities and imaginary organisms. Monroe cultivates a taste for scientific challenges, relationships to math, the properties in physics, and the surreal. His dream-like scenes overflow with cellular shapes, creating a landscape set on a universal level. Möbius strips and algorithms integrate with human figures to create an environment that allows the mind to explore a journey of solitude. Monroe’s atmospheric imagery achieves a pause in both time and space; a moment that can be read as either the creation of new being or as the passing in to a serene immortality.

“Observations of Light and Matter is a way for me to reinterpret the facets of current and past scientific frontiers. The work is sometimes directly derived from scientific observations and at other times loosely inspired by them. My purpose is to ask the questions that lead to an understanding of physics in nature all around us. I often don’t completely understand the entirety of every concept, but I’m searching for a way to interpret their possibilities and how they might have an impact on myself and others. My interest is not in explaining or figuring out, but more in the interpretation and injection of perspective of these subjects.”

Brendan Monroe was born and raised in Southern California with a BFA honours from the Art Centre College of Design. He has exhibited his art internationally at galleries such as Richard Heller in Los Angeles and Galerie LJ in Paris. His work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times and New American Paintings. Monroe currently lives and works in Oakland, California.

Happy New Year!
It’s shaping up to be a good year. So far so busy in the studio. Observations of Light and Matter is my next solo show opening in March at Cooper Cole Gallery in Toronto.

I’ve started up a Tumblr page and Twitter feed. Evah’s also been Tumbling and Tweeting.

Charitable Causes
I’m participating in two charitable shows coming up as well. The $100 show at Wieden + Kennedy in Portland February 2. Each artwork in the show is a steal at only $100. I’ll have two bigger pieces at the Fresh stART show in Santa Monica on February 4. Both of these shows are donating %50 their sales to charities.

NYT

Alternative Press Book Fair
This weekend if you are in the Bay Area, I will be participating in the East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair with my friend Deth Sun. It takes place on Saturday, December 10 at the Berkeley City College.
